The number of mobile handset shipped in the fourth quarter of 2004 was 24 percent higher than the same period a year ago. “Global shipments of mobile phones reached 194.3 million units in the October to December period, breaking the previous record of 164.5 million set in last year’s third quarter” according to IDC. Nokia saw it’s market share rise to 34 percent, compared to an average of 31.2 percent for the year. The report is being reported in several ways, especially for Nokia. Despite having a better than expected fourth quarter, there are many commentators who don’t believe the quarter was good enough. CNN is reporting that Nokia’s average profite from each handset sold fell to 18 euros in 2004, down from 38 euros in 2000. This saw operating profit fall by 23 percent over the same period despite selling 62 percent more handsets. With the hardware part of the mobile business becoming more commoditized, Nokia’s move into content is vital to maintain its market leadership.
