ROK Entertainment has announced it plans to sell full-length movies on SD-Cards to be viewed on mobile phones. The cards also come with a Rok Media Player which will format the card for the phone screen. Using SD Cards is sure to annoy carriers, which want content downloaded over their networks. On the other hand, handset manufacturers will give the system a boost, and Nokia has already joined the Secure Digital (SD) group. Depending on how much content you get the asking price of 15 pounds is a bit steep – I don’t know about Britain but in many countries that’s the price of a regular DVD. “Deals announced by Rok reflect content light enough to be tolerable on a tiny phone screen: it has signed up Aadrman Studios, creators of Wallace and Gromit; Indestructible Studios, which owns Captain Scarlet; and hit TV shows such as Red Dwarf.” I don’t think it’s the lightness of the content that’s a good business plan, but the cult factor. There’s quite a few episodes of Red Dwarf I’d buy – in fact the themesong would make a good ringtone… or maybe “It’s the wrong trousers, Gromit. The wrong trousers!”
