Mobile operating system giants PalmSource and Symbian have both thrown their weight behind the Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP), an organization pushing for open standards in the handset and PDA markets. The goal is to achieve “a better business environment for mobile products and services, though the organization stresses that its remit does not extend to defining a rigid framework of software and hardware components that participants must adhere to.” If the idea means that mobile software producers don’t have to rewrite their programs for so many different handsets and networks it can only be a good thing.
