Wireless Ink, the owner of free mobile blogging siteWinkSite, has “entered into an agreement” to be bought by MaxCorp, a company which thinks “the killer application for mobile after voice and email is content”.
David Harper, Wireless Ink’s Chief Technology Officer and Founder, commented, “The monetization of those mobile communities are the logical next step (e.g. affiliate marketing, advertising, syndication, selling of personalized information & premium services, person-to-person payments, mobile selling, mobile auctions etc.) Multiple revenue models are currently being explored by Wireless Ink.
Making a profit from the service is fine, but selling personalized information is an activity that almost always crosses the thin privacy line. Winksite was great because it allowed people to put up their own content to be accessed from mobile phones for free. It would be a shame if this was ruined by MaxCorps quest for a dollar.
