Sensis, an Australian directory company owned by incumbent telco Telstra, has announced that its recent purchase of mapping and street directory business Universal Publishers will allow it to “incorporate [mapping] information into wireless technology, which should be very useful for personal navigation and for business to business purposes following the recent explosion of interest in GPRS technology”.
The new service will include street turn-by-turn details which could be used in cars or on a handheld system such as Blackberry. Telstra has a history of charging at the higher end of the pricing spectrum, and IDM expresses the hope that the new services will be more reasonably priced.
