iTunes on Motorola phones in January?

Apple and Motorola have hinted that iTunes may be available on some Motorola handsets as early as next January. The big thing about the deal is that it will bypass carriers altogether – which will annoy them as they want all content to be delivered over their networks, thereby generating revenue from bandwidth usage. They’ve blocked similar deals before, by simply refusing to allow the handsets onto their networks, but the same tactic may not work this time. Apple’s iTunes is a huge (and more importantly, very popular) brand which boasts a large number of fans which companies like to call ‘dedicated’ and other people like to call ‘fanatics’.
The upshot of this is that there is likely to be a large number of people who will buy the iTunes enabled handset irrespective of which network it will run on, removing the carriers most potent leverage. (via textually.org)
