The Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) is setting out to battle the piracy of various ringtones. The creation of any form of ringtone (monophonic, polyphonic or truetone) involves a royalty payment of one form or another, and RIM seems to feel that a large number of the ringtones sold in Malaysia don’t pay that royalty. I support the protection of intellectual property in all its forms, but I’m still waiting for the day when ringtones become more reasonably priced. I suspect that will happen when truetones become more common and people are able to record songs straight from their legally-purchased CDs onto their mobiles to use as ringtones. (via Ringtonia)
