The New Consumer Products Group in Microsoft’s Home & Entertainment Division is a highly entrepreneurial team that is defining the next generation of consumer technologies for the consumer/home market. As a Product Planner, you will have the opportunity to shape product & business strategy in a fast-paced, startup environment by driving and evaluating new consumer market opportunities, analyzing key customer needs & trends, and developing new consumer products to best address these opportunities.
Responsibilities/Qualifications:
Market Requirements: Impact product strategy by defining & validating customer requirements, user needs, trends, customer segmentation, etc. Candidate must have strong experience in driving primary & secondary market research to identify & prioritize product requirements as the “voice of the customer market”, guiding the product team. Must be able to synthesize large amounts of information into crisp, coherent recommendations and discern clever & effective product ideas. Must have adequate technical comfort level to discuss feature & product roadmap tradeoffs with engineers & developers. Statistics background a plus.
Strategic Planning:
Identify new consumer technology opportunities by thinking strategically & analytically about the consumer technology landscape, emergent trends, etc. Proven entrepreneurial experience in identifying emergent technical innovations or user needs & building them into successfully building v1.0 consumer businesses a strong plus. Work across many groups in the company & external parties to identify new product opportunities & areas of collaboration, integration.
Business Planning:
Provide strong business leadership by driving the go-to-market strategy via market requirements documents. Collaborate closely with Finance in the crafting of v1 business models & plans. Candidate must have strong experience in setting business strategy at the product unit level or higher, think strategically about business issues & develop business cases, as well as possess strong leadership, communication, presentation & negotiation skills. Experience driving biz dev deals a plus.
Additional qualifications include minimum 4-6 years of product planning, product management, or business development experience at the product-unit level or higher in the consumer space. Candidates should be highly entrepreneurial and self-sufficient, managing multiple projects simultaneously and comfortable interacting with technical leaders, other product & marketing groups, and senior executives. MBA/Masters degree preferred. Candidate should have demonstrated excellent analytical, problem resolution, and decision-making skills. Initiative, excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team environment that demands excellence are essential.
