Mobile phones have been used in Ghana’s recent elections in several ways. First, politicians used them to get around the 24-hour blackout on political campaigns before the election by promoting themselves via SMS. Second, journalists are using mobile phones to SMS certified results from polling booths to their radio stations which will broadcast the news – going some way to ensure transparent elections. Finally, the results of the election will be available in real time to subscribers of Spacefon and Mobitel. Ghana was the first country in sub-Saharan colonial Africa to become independent, and about half of the 20 million people are registered to vote.
