While other countries pile on the physical pounds, Britain is becoming ‘digitally obese’. A study by Toshiba found that “music, images, e-mails, and texts are being hoarded on mobiles, cameras laptops and PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants)”. With one gigabyte the digital equivelent of a pick-up truck piled with paper, the study found that many Britons were carrying 10 trucks worth of data. In good news for the producers of mobile content the report predicts that people could be carrying around 20 gigabytes of data next year. Not all of that will be on mobile phones, but the trend in carrying more data should extend to handsets, which means more messages, ringtones, pictures, movies and so on.
