An interesting article on mobile gaming, which, to the surprise of carriers, has surpassed ringtones in revenue according to this piece. There’s a few statements which run against general belief, such as “When you mention online gamers, the bulk of the individuals you are talking about are pimply faced, teen-aged boys who may be a bit insecure and antisocial”. Most reports indicate that people who play mobile games spread across the whole spectrum of age and gender, distinguishing them from other gamers. However, the article seems to lump online games together with mobile games.
The article also claims “cell phones’ small size and limited amount of memory are the reasons why the old school games are proving popular”. I disagree, a mixture of retro-nostalgia and the fact that lots of old games are strangely compelling are the reason for the popularity. Perhaps that companies can make a profit from selling the games on mobiles whereas it’s more difficult using other channels is the reason a lot of these games are offered.
