Books to your mobile via WINKsite

Creative Commons, a new copyright license that give content creators more control over the rights they reserve to their work, is having its library (free reg required) of works put onto the mobile space by Winksite. At the moment there are five books on offer, and more will be added.

This makes a welcome change from the normal content on mobile phones, which the carriers and other content providers are trying to keep as restrictive as possible. The mobile space is perfect for the companies desire to keep total control over their content to make as much money as possible, a battle the content industry is waging with increasing vigour in the online space. It’s great that the third side of the battle – people who say “respect the rights of the author, but keep copyright restrictions reasonable”.
A good book to learn more about the current situation of copyright and what can be done about it is Free Culture, by Lawrence Lessig, which is one of the books available from WINKsite. If you don’t want to read it on your mobile, it is available as a free PDF, or you can buy it and support some organisations.
