One industry pundit is predicting that financial applications – rather than 3G – will be the ‘next big thing’. “3G hasn’t had a dramatic effect yet; consumers just get a lot of extra services through their mobiles. It will only drive the market slightly,” said Bob Sweetlove, business manager at distributor Hugh Symons.Business applications will become increasingly important in the mobile space, but I think they’re likely to move in conjunction with 3G, which could provide a much better consumer experience. Research and Markets has produced a paper pointing out that mobile commerce and payments demand more than most mobile operators’ billing systems can provide, and exhorting the operators to adapt or miss out on a lucrative market.
