A study by Research and Markets has found that mobile content will be responsible for a significant part of mobile revenue growth in Europe over the next five years.
“Mobile content and entertainment services accounted for 2% of total mobile service revenue and 16% of non-voice revenue in 2002, and are forecast to grow to contribute 11% of total mobile service revenue and 34% of non-voice revenue in 2008.”
This prediction has been supported in Malaysia, where analysts from Frost & Sullivan Asia-Pacific are predicting mobile download revenues to double over the next year, from US$41.2 million to US$91.1 million.
“Mobile downloads are seen as the new revenue growth for mobile operators, which are currently plagued by flagging voice revenues and stiff competition in the local cellular market. To spur development of mobile content, operators are currently tying up with content providers – as a form of outsourcing the dynamic content business,” said analyst Janice Chong said.
