WiFi mobile chip is ‘threat to 3G’

Cambridge Silicon Radio has developed an 802.11g Wi-Fi chip to go into mobile phones. This would allow wireless download rates of up to 54Mbps, compared to 3G’s 384 kbps. This is not the “3G killer” the article makes out though, as Wi-Fi has a range of 100m compared to 3G’s much larger range, measured in kilometers. The two technologies will exist side by side for a while, with phones determining which network is the most suitable to use.
