Telecom New Zealand just launched its 3G service, but appears to have avoided the video conferencing promotion used by most of its contemporaries around the world. Instead, the four technologies being introduced are “Video messaging, Push 2 Talk (PTT), mobile broadband and the Harrier Pocket PC Phone Edition”. Video messaging is simply a 15 sec recorded video. Telecom seems to be focusing on the mobile broadband to push its service, giving this a center page ad on its Web page.
So far, the coverage of the network includes “Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin Airport, and before Christmas 2004 in key holiday destinations like Coromandel, Taupo, Queenstown and Wanaka”.
