A 3G consultant is promoting the technology as appropriate for Africa, which can learn from the mistakes of the first world. Rather than content, the first thing he promotes is cheaper voice calls: “It will ultimately prove to be a very attractive proposition to the man in the street, as voice calls are often less expensive than on GSM. In fact, 3G offers the potential for up to 75% savings on straight voice.”
Things like video clips and music downloads are mentioned as of interest to the “20-something, employed, technologically aware crowd”, but equal weight is placed on things like rural doctors being able to get second opinions based on video clips. This technique currently relies on SMS.
