The Chinese government is poised to announce its plans for 3G rollout. Although it would like to promote its domestic standard, TD-SCDMA, tests have shown that handsets created to use it are not as good as handsets created for the two international standards. In addition, some in the industry believe China could reduce the number of 3G licences it issues from four or five to three, which would leave one of the Chinese telcos out in the cold in respect to 3G.
