3G rollouts are beginning to happen in Asia, but telcos are still worried about what “killer app” will drive takeup. According to NEC they should start introducing more 2.5G services if they want to promote 3G. “There is no killer service that is used only for 3G.” Data from Japan’s NTT DoCoMo in March this year shows that in terms of packets, 88% of the packet ratio comes from mobile Internet access, and of this, 77% of accesses have to do with entertainment. Ringtones and character downloads account for 35% of the entertainment segment, games and fortune telling contribute a further 18%, while the remainder goes to other services. Most countries are studying Japan and South Korea, and waiting to see what China will do.
