A new program called Cell-Life is using SMS technology to keep therapeutic counselors making house calls in Africa in touch with clinics and medical staff. “The system used by Sizophila combines a comprehensive database that includes a patient’s treatment history and lab results with a messaging service that enables counselors, clinic staff and doctors to communicate using SMS.” While there are many such programs which run on higher-bandwidth wireless networks, this technology is important for areas which are unlikely to recieve more than basic mobile communication in the near future.
