Telcos are planning on selling CD-quality songs over their mobile networks to boost revenue, and hopefully recoup the billions they invested in “next-gen” mobile infrastructure. Assuming advances in technology will make the phones as powerful as an iPod, the main challenges to the success of music sales over wireless networks appears to be the consumer – who may prefer to transfer songs they already own onto a portable music device rather than pay extra to download the songs wirelessly – and the record companies, who are worried the practice will encourage piracy and are therefore reluctant to strike content deals.
