Disney goes mobile

Mark Handler, executive vice president and managing director of Walt Disney Internet Group International has outlined the company’s strategy for being “a worldwide leader in mobile-information and entertainment content”. Interestingly, this includes the launch of 3D-games, well before 3D capable handsets become commonplace.
The company, already a success in Japan, has the benefit of some of the world’s most popular characters to promote its service. While some mobile content companies have to try to get customers interested in the latest technology, Walt Disney just has to say “Mickey Mouse” to get a thriving subscriber base.
An example of how Disney uses mobile content is the packages that are released in conjunction with movies, such as The Incredibles. This will include a range of games, polyphonic ringtones and voice ringtones, featuring incoming calls and voicemail alerts from the film’s characters. Two games are currently ready for launch, with a 3D game also in development for later release. There will also be 3D wallpapers, animated photo frames and video and MMS products.
