BBC Vocab/Geirfa

The BBC continues to experiment and innovate online. The latest twist — a dictionary program that translates words as the user moves the cursor — launched Tuesday for Welsh to English but eventually could translate well across the web. Developed by BBC Wales, Vocab is being offered as open source code for Welsh-language web sites outside the BBC. Grahame Davies , executive producer of Welsh language New Media for BBC Wales, says it was designed to be used to translate words from any language into another language. They’re already looking into a Welsh-Spanish version and exploring various English combinations. The potential is unlimited; this could be a particularly useful tool for sites wooing multiple-language visitors but without the ability to set up contemporaneous sites.
