PC makers, working with Microsoft, set course for consumers’ living rooms on Tuesday, launching a slew of new Media Center PCs. Dell, Gateway, Hewlett-Packard, Sony and Toshiba all introduced their latest Media Center PCs, wrapped around Microsoft’s Windows XP Media Center 2005 operating system. The latest version of the multimedia-oriented OS features a special user interface for tasks such as playing movies.

A key part of this is the new PlaysForSure logo program designed to help consumers choose portable devices and music services that work together (read trying push WM ubiquity and interoperability, a dig at Apple). Consumers can expect to see PlaysForSure products from Creative Labs, iRiver, Rio and more, as well as content services from CinemaNow, MSN Music, MusicNow and Napster in time for this holiday season.
