The Lost Treasures of BBC

I’ve written about this before: BBC’s ambitious project to put its archives online (the Creative Archives project) is now a sorry excuse for what it was promised to be…(read all my coverage of it on the dedicated company page)…One archivist familiar with the BBC’s material says in this story: “The copyright problems are enormous, and digitizing old film and audio tape is expensive. At first the bulk of the material will consist of wildlife archives because that stuff has already been digitized and animals don’t get copyright. For children who want pictures of lions and tigers it will be useful. But for anyone hoping to see old drama or documentaries it is going to be a long wait.”

The initial releases will not even take the form of entire programmes, but will be short clips.
