Netflix and TiVo in Development Deal; Launch in 2005; No Merger

So Netflix and Tivo have formally announced: they are going into a joint development deal…”the two companies will develop technology and will work with Hollywood studios to secure content for digital distribution.”

Reuters: Tivo CEO Mike Ramsay said no merger or acquisition was in the works between the two companies. The companies target a 2005 debut for a product that would let consumers download movies onto their TiVos via IP…Netflix is speaking with studios and expected to sign unique licensing agreements with each, according to the company.
