EBay Dips A Toe Into Music Downloads With PassAlong

Seems very gimmicky to me…eBay, which is already piloting music downloads through its site, is striking a new deal with a startup, PassAlong Networks, whereby PassAlong will sell digital downloads via its own site and through eBay.

Update: the PassAlong site on eBay is live now…

PassAlong will be offering a download catalog of about 200,000 songs initially, but says that number will grow to 500,000 by the end of the month, including the complete catalogs of Warner Music Group, BMG and Universal Music Group.

In addition downloads, PassAlong is encouraging and rewarding legal music sharing. Consumers can send friends a link to a favorite song or a collection of songs by e-mail or through IM services from AOL, MSN and Yahoo. When a song passed through PassAlong results in a sale, PassAlong members earn PassAlong Points, redeemable for digital music at any PassAlong store…

PCMag: PassAlong hopes to license its order processing and customer referral technology to companies like Apple and Sony…

I have dozens of music purchased through PassAlong.com but now is unusable because WMP can’t find the passalong.com website. Any ideas who licenses these legacy purchases? Thank you.
