A new password technology for consumers being introduced by AOL could mean an end to internet users having to remember multiple login details for their different online accounts and pose a challenge to Microsoft’s current solution, Passport.
AOL’s PassCode Premium Service consists of a $9.95 key-tag device provided by RSA Security, the online identity management provider. As well as buying the device, those wanting to use the service will also pay an additional $1.95 to $4.95 a month depending on the number of logins on their account protected.
The key-tag is already widely used in the corporate world, but AOL’s launch is a first for the consumer space.
AP: It won’t protect services offered by third parties on the open Internet, outside AOL’s walled gardens, except in cases where their statements and other sensitive information are sent to the AOL e-mail account. Nor is the second password needed to use AOL Instant Messenger.
