eMusic To Relaunch MP3 Service As Indie Service

eMusic, one of the oldest names in digital music, is relaunching its music subscription service with an independent appeal dramatically different than its bigger rivals’.

The service will offer unprotected MP3 files from independent labels, a sharp contrast from services such as iTunes or MSN Music store, all of which wrap their songs in copy protection.

NYT: When the new service starts this week, eMusic will look as much like a magazine as an online music service…with an assortment of reviews, recommendations and columns.

The site already has 70,000 paying subscribers…Rather than charging per song, eMusic charges monthly subscription fees ranging from $10 to $20, for 40 to 90 downloads.
