Yahoo’s getting serious about the online music game…it has bought out Musicmatch, for $160 million in cash. The San Diego-based music startup had been on the block for some time now, with rumors of Yahoo’s interest floating for almost a year now…The company’s backers included Intel Capital, Redpoint Ventures, and Thomson Multimedia.
(WSJ reported last month that Yahoo would tie up with Musicnet…that turned out to be wrong, for now…)
Yahoo’s Launch is already one of the biggest music streaming and radio sites and Musicmatch, which is primarily known for its streaming jukebox, will complement that. The new version of its software, released last month, won some good reviews…
Yahoo estimates the purchase will boost its online listeners by 12.9 million, to some 23 million listeners. About 225,000 subscribers pay for Musicmatch’s unlimited access service.
This really rounds out everything we do in music,” Dave Goldberg, general manager of Yahoo’s music division, said during an interview with AP. “We want to offer users a way to interact with digital music in any way that they want.
