2004 Information Format Trends: Content, Not Containers

(via ResourceShelf): An 18-page PDF report from OCLC that examines the “unbundling of content” from traditional containers (books, journals, CDs) and distribution methods (postal mail, resource sharing). As the boundaries blur between content, technology and the information consumer, the report shows how format now matters less than the information within the container.

“More and more, the “format” is a communication device that moves from creator to consumer in channels completely outside of the traditional ones such as the library. Content is no longer format-dependent and users are not dependent on traditional distribution channels for access to content.”

Talks about a lot of issues I talk about here on a day-to-day basis…
