On Friday, Hewlett-Packard plans to unveil its HP-branded iPod along with a pile of other consumer gear, including its first TVs, an entertainment hub and the usual array of printers and cameras.
The iPod, while expected to be similar to Apple’s version, is important both as the company’s entry into the music market as well as a part of HP’s strategy to become cool enough to be allowed in the living room.
WSJ: H-P is bringing Apple’s technology into other H-P products as well…for example, the “digital entertainment center,” which looks like a DVD player and is designed to be paired with a TV, can play DVDs, store digital photos and music, and act as a PVR.
The device will use iTunes as a jukebox feature to let people play digital music collections in their living rooms, using a remote control rather than a computer keyboard. If the digital entertainment center is also connected to the Internet, a consumer could simply turn on the device and their TV and use the remote to purchase songs from Apple’s music store.
