3 Rules out offering open mobile Internet services

UK’s 3G operator 3 has ruled out any change in its walled garden approach to mobile Internet content, despite criticism. In a rather arrogant statement, Gareth Jones, COO of 3UK said: “People don’t want open access, that’s not what our customers tell us they want,” he said. “Anyone in their right mind who tries to do anything on the Internet with a screen that size has to be nuts.”
TheFeature: 3’s obviously put a lot of effort into its mobile content, and it’s a smart move to get videos and other content that takes advantage of the 3G network and its speeds. But having an open system encourages use not only by consumers, but by content producers.
