PortalPlayer, the company that makes semiconductors and other devices that are primarily used in Apple Computer’s iPods, has filed for an IPO. But its dependence on iPod makes it a risky play…and then there’s Microsoft.
PortalPlayer noted in its IPO filing that Microsoft’s software is an unknown variable. “If this technology is successful, it could compete with existing pay-per-download music services,” the filing said. “We cannot predict the impact on our business should this or other similar technology or other content distribution models become widely adopted.”
