Perhaps the most-recognized name in online game rentals is Los Angeles-based GameFly.com, launched in November 2002.

One of GameFly’s major competitors is RedOctane. While GameFly calls itself the largest game rental service, RedOctane — which started in 1999 — says it is the oldest.
