Reed Elsevier’s Online Revs Lift Company’s Results

Reed Elsevier, the world’s largest scientific publisher and the owner of Variety, reported that its online businesses, into which it has been pouring money over the past four years, helped the Anglo-Dutch media group report a healthy rise in half-year profits.

At Reed Business, online services now account for nearly 12% of the division’s publishing revenues, growing at over 20 percent a year.

CEO Crispin David in FT (sub. req.): “Electronic products now account for 30 per cent of our group’s £5bn total revenues..”

“Increasingly, just delivering information will cease to be sufficient; it will need to be incorporated into a user’s workflow, mixed with other data and then sliced and diced for personal needs. Magazine websites such as Variety will perform more like television channels, with audio and video clips and opportunities to participate in industry discussions and training.” High hopes
