(this is a temporary link and will go dead in a week or so, I believe): A story on the tech coalition AACS LA, which was formally announced in mid-July (my coverage here). Similar to a credit card model, AACS technology could work in any digital home where devices are wired into a cable, phone or broadband network. “But AACS is explicitly focused on next-generation optical discs such as HD DVD and Blu-ray,” notes Forrester analyst Ted Schadler. More than 5 percent of households with broadband are already downloading videos, and broadband providers like Verizon and BellSouth are already wiring neighborhoods with HD-ready fiber-optic cable. For AACS LA to get the most value from digital content, Schadler believes that the specification must grow to include downloadable content.
