A convoluted and unclear case for why RealNetworks’ attempt to open up the iPod (through its Harmony software technology) should be thwarted….the writer gets trapped in his own words, if you ask me.
A hidden bit of news: Napster may license Harmony technology, once its legality is clearer, according to Chris Gorog, CEO of Roxio, Napster’s parent. “We’re going to look at it very carefully,” he says. “If Apple doesn’t fight it, and the technology works, we’d be seriously interested. But Apple will most likely fight it.”
CNN Money: “The question Apple now must answer is, Is it strategically more important to preserve its closed system, or is the iPod the future profit machine for the company? In the latter case, it should pump up sales numbers at any reasonable cost. It’s quite a pickle.”
