Comcast Starts Disney Delivery Via Internet

Comcast is still tying up with Disney, despite the latter spurning the buyout offer earlier this year…only, this one is for delivering movies and TV programs through broadband.

Comcast will be giving its subscribers ABC News and Disney’s children’s programming…Beginning today to coincide with the run-up to the Democratic National Convention, Comcast’s 5.7 million high-speed Internet subscribers will receive a number of ABC News features, including live streaming news and archived versions of its “World News Tonight” and “Nightline” programs.

Also, later this year, Comcast will launch an online children’s channel that will offer Disney videos etc.

Comcast will pay Disney an undisclosed amount for the new content, most of which will be given to its Internet subscribers at no additional cost, and will share in any additional revenue Disney earns by selling content subscription services to Comcast users.

By the way, Comcast already has a broadband content service for subscribers called “The Fan”, which is a Flash-based player with multi-media content…

WSJ: (sub. req.) Comcast executives say their continued success in signing up new subscribers — 394,000 in the first quarter of 2004 alone — is evidence that their content strategy is working. Comcast’s broadband subscribers also tend to use the company’s content heavily, which should decrease the likelihood that they’ll switch to DSL to take advantage of a discount offer, executives say.
