Details on AT&T’s 3G UMTS Launch

AT&T Wireless has announced its 3G UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) mobile network in the U.S…(read the story earlier). Customers in Detroit, Phoenix, San Francisco and Seattle can now access broadband mobile wireless services…the company is also deploying UMTS technology in Dallas and San Diego, and expects to offer service in these markets before the end of this year.

The users will now be able to acess more richer data and content services through their laptops, PDAs or phones…with average wireless data speeds of between 220 and 320 kilobits-per-second (kbps), with bursts up to 384kbps.

Content partners: The service is priced at $24.99 a month for unlimited use for consumers, who can pay an additional $5 a month to receive streaming multimedia clips through RealNetworks’s consumer service.
