Digital media companies are beginning to court the universities with some ferocity: As part of a pilot program, Duke University has teamed up with Apple to give iPods to all 1,800 incoming freshmen this fall.
Curiously, the new iPods will be pre-loaded with school calendars and other information. Students will also be able to download supplementary class material in addition to being able to play music.
TMO: The program comes with a $500,000 price tag, including the iPods, 1 year of AppleCare, the academic computing specialist, grant funding for faculty, and “associated research costs.” The iPods will become property of the students at the end of the year, and upper classmen who take classes utilizing an iPod in the curriculum will be able to get loaner iPods for the duration of the course
