This would have been a big deal if the triumvirate were announcing “real” interoperability, but hopefully this is a step in the right direction. The three are teaming up to link their separate IM services for use in the workplace (not general users).
To use the new system, companies will have to license new Microsoft network software that will serve as the hub connecting messaging systems operated separately by AOL, MSN and Yahoo.
For now, the three companies have no plans to permit users outside the workplace to communicate with one another over different instant message systems.
