Coca Cola, which operates the MyCokeMusic online music download service in UK, believes it is doing great with the service and is planning to expand it in rest of Europe. The first new site/service is being launched in Austria, at MyCokeMusic.at. The Austrian site, like the UK counterpart, is also powered by OD2 (OD2 was recently bought out by U.S. company Loudeye). The service has about 300,000 songs, with a single download costing 83 Euro cents each and albums costing 11.99 Euros.
Since January, at least 2.5 million people have visited mycokemusic.com and have purchased 530,000 downloads. As a result, the site is now Britain’s second-largest downloading service after the recently launched Apple iTunes.
With the aim of boosting the profile of legal digital music even more, O’Connor said that Coca-Cola plans to sponsor Britain’s first downloaded-music sales chart. Compiled by the Official UK Charts Co., it’s set to roll out Sept. 1. Coca-Cola already sponsors the Official UK Singles and Albums charts.
