Web Players Join Forces For Better Plugins

It is one of those announcements which sounds great in theory, and it probably will work as a gang-up mechanism againt Microsoft (When was the last time you heard that word describing MSFT?). It also comes at an opportune moment, as a major IE security flaw came to light this week…

The news: The Mozilla Foundation, in partnership with Apple, Macromedia, Opera and Sun Microsystems have announced a series of changes to web browser plugins that will allow web developers to offer richer web browsing experiences. High time…multimedia support for Opera, which I’ve been using for the last 3-4 years, sucks. Period. And I’ve talked about this with Opera CEO Jon von Tetzchner in the past.

Anyway, the announced alliance is working to extend the Netscape Plugin Application Program Interface (NPAPI) to support an advanced plugin model based on open Web standards.

Plugins can be used to display audio or visual multimedia content through applications such as Flash, Shockwave, QuickTime, or Java.
