Music label EMI will this summer become the first record label to launch a trial of mobile ‘super-distribution’ (a fancy word for peer-to-peer distrbution which is media and distribution method agnostic), enabling consumers to forward tracks to other users legally.
Consumers will be able to send songs to their friends, who will be able to preview the track a set number of times to decide if they wish to buy it. A DRM wrapper will cause the track to expire if not purchased within a set timeframe.
The trial will be with an unnamed major European mobile operator…A second major European operator is also working with EMI, and is likely to launch a trial in autumn or winter.
