UK Newspapers To Get Into Digital Music Fray

Hell, why not? Guardian Unlimited will be the first to launch a download service around this year’s Glastonbury festival after striking a deal with EMI. It will get exclusive Glastonbury tracks, including David Bowie, The Bees and Air, for 99p a time. EMI is also offering 20 free video clips. Simon Waldman, director of digital publishing at Guardian Newspapers, stressed the service was being operated on a strict trial basis.

What Waldman did not tell you is that he runs the 50Quid.org site/blog, which is a music fan site, though with a difference. It taps into a certain zeitgeist, some of which I hope will be reflected in the Guardian service…

The digital operations of The Sun, the Mirror, The Times and The Mail are also working on both commercial and promotion-led download models.
