Teletext To Close Website; Axe 45

Teletext, an institution in UK which most U.S. people won’t understand (think of it as yellow pages and CNN Headline News with no graphics, mixed together), is closing its Teletext website along with some of its satellite TV services leading to an estimated 45 job losses, as it closes loss-making businesses to focus on its core TV and holiday activities.

Despite having hundreds of thousands of visitors a month, Teletext has failed to translate traffic into profits at the site, and staff are now being consulted about the process, which may lead to as many as 45 job losses by August.

Guardian: (reg. req.) Teletext has invested tens of millions of pounds over recent years in new technology to prepare for the switch from analogue to digital television. It was an early innovator on the internet, but, like many other media organisations, it has struggled to find ways to make money from the web.
