More on Netflix’s VOD Plans

The 500th story on Netflix’s plans to launch online VOD next year…Netflix doesn’t plan on having all 22,000 movies available for download, but it will provide a lot of niche content, such as foreign films and extreme sports. Eventually, “we’ll offer every film in either DVD or download,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix.

On release windows: The window of time between theatrical release and other channels will continue to shrink, said Sarandos. But it will take at least five years before movie studios make their movie hits available for download at the same time they’re available in DVDs, said Sarandos.

USA Today: At this point, Netflix has the brand recognition and the momentum in Web-based, subscription movie rentals. If there’s a threat to Netflix, it’s probably not me-too competitors. It’s probably … movies on demand. But then, Tivo and Netflix can always merge, and make merry…
