I’m surprised why more newspaper portals have not done this before: Boston.com, the local portal for boston area and online presence of Boston Globe, has acquired
Boston Dirt Dogs, a popular Red Sox fan site, and will incorporate its content into Boston.com’s sports section in June. Financial details were not disclosed…
The fan site is mainly an interactive forum, and quirky as they come, but would be a good way for Boston.com to embrace the community, the rationale goes. “Our users love joining the conversation about sports online every day, whether it’s sending us photos for a Johnny Damon look-alikes gallery, creating party recipes for the Patriots’ Super Bowl run or ranting about a managerial move in the previous night’s game.”
I hope other newspaper portals take notice and make similar strategic acquisitions…the deal above probably didn’t involve a lot of money changing hands, but brings in a very loyal community, which Boston.com sports reporters and columnists can play off…
