AOL’s Garden Might Flourish Without Rainman

AOL’s recent move of adopting HTML as the coding language for its interface and content–instead of its proprietary programming language called “Rainman”–will enable it to do more..that’s all it is willing to say right now.

AOL executives insist they have no plan to give away their online content and become mostly ad-supported, like Yahoo (despite what media outlets have hyped it out to be, over the last week.)

The again, AOL.com is getting a facelift this summer as part of the change. In addition to letting members see all their personalized content without AOL’s software there, the new AOL.com will offer more fare for nonmembers. [Jim] Bankoff, [executive VP of programming] declined to be specific but said it would exclude AOL’s best stuff: “We have a strong rule that the premium experiences get held back for members.”
